MIRA, FPTI to jointly develop lithium-ion batteries in Brazil

01-Jun-2015

MIRA and Fundação Parque Tecnológico Itaipu (FPTI) have joined hands to develop a new centre of excellence for lithium-ion batteries targeting automotive and stationary power applications, says a press release. “Brazil is a key strategic growth territory for MIRA and this exciting collaboration provides the opportunity to apply and further develop relevant MIRA technology with the demanding environments and duty cycles of the territory. It brings together two ambitious and capable partners with the intention to demonstrate Brazil’s competitiveness in emerging technologies, with the associated environmental benefits and contributions to the local economy,” said Declan Allen, Chief Operating Officer at MIRA.

Significance: The new battery development centre is expected to leverage MIRA’s know-how in international automotive market along with FPTI’s expertise on energy production and storage for large stationary application. The focus in transportation will be on motorcycles, trucks and buses, whereas renewable energy solutions take the spot in stationary applications. The initial programme will also help in undertaking work in areas such as hydrogen and liquid air. According to the press release, MIRA and FPTI may have the first results within two years. Collaborations such as the one between MIRA and FPTI, which will focus on development of expertise in battery and battery management systems, is expected to help boost the deployment of hybrid and electric vehicles in Brazil.
