Apple CarPlay software update to allow in-car video streaming

26-Feb-2026

Apple CarPlay users may soon be able to watch videos — and potentially stream movies — directly on their car’s infotainment screen, following a new software update expected later in 2026. With the release of Apple’s iOS 26.4 beta, the company has enabled app developers to support video streaming via AirPlay to a vehicle’s display. Importantly, playback will only be available when the car is parked.

The feature was first hinted at during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, where Apple previewed updates to its mobile software platform. Alongside the introduction of the Liquid Glass design language, the update brought enhanced customization for CarPlay, including configurable home screen widgets. These changes align CarPlay more closely with the more advanced CarPlay Ultra, which is limited to select Aston Martin models.

Apple is also expected to integrate its own Apple TV app into CarPlay, with third-party platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube likely to follow. As the feature remains in beta, there is no confirmed public release date. When it does roll out, it will only work on vehicles and devices compatible with the latest software.

Rival platform Android Auto does not currently support native video streaming. However, several manufacturers — including Tesla and Kia — already offer built-in streaming apps within their infotainment systems, though access requires active paid subscriptions.
