Displays a series-production preview of a more advanced version of the company's Modular Infotainment Toolkit
At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), along with introducing the Budd-e electric vehicle (EV), Volkswagen (VW) announced that the e-Golf, also an EV, displays a series-production preview of a more advanced version of the company's Modular Infotainment Toolkit (MIB), according to a company statement. Along with the advanced infotainment control system, the e-Golf gets a 9.2-inch, 280 x 640 pixel resolution, clear glass home screen to hold a new infotainment system. The new system features a configurable home screen with interactive tiles and driver-selectable preferences, with drivers able to set 10 tiles for their preferred functions. This updated MIB system features touch-sensitive buttons and a push-rotary switch to control a home screen with a large main area and two configurable tiles to the right of the home screen; these two tiles can be assigned any of ten specific functions. The system will also be compatible with smartphone integration platforms Mirror Link, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, driven through VW's Car-Net App-Connect interface. The system also features an updated voice recognition system, which will launch in mid-2016 in Europe first and enables a keyword activation, which starts the voice recognition system simply by saying "Hello Volkswagen." VW also displayed its third-generation rear-seat entertainment system, which will also be launched in Europe in mid-2016. VW has also integrated a wireless phone charging system, something already seen on Toyota and some General Motors (GM) models. VW is also working on a system called Personalization 2.0, which will save a driver's settings to the cloud via Volkswagen Car-Net ID; these settings can be downloaded to another compatible VW product at a later time.
Significance: After displaying the Golf R Touch at the 2015 CES, VW is coming closer to being the first automaker to launch gesture control into the compact car segment, although a launch date for the e-Golf Touch in the US was not clear. The updated, reconfigurable system seems poised to dramatically improve VW's infotainment and connectivity controls. Although the system looks to launch on the e-Golf Touch, it can be expected to roll out across other VW products in the future.
