French supplier secures contract from an international automaker to jointly develop high-pressure hydrogen storage system
Faurecia will showcase its fuel cell technology at the Hannover Messe 2018 this week (23 to 27 April) in Germany, the French supplier said in a press release on 19 April. The company will display a high-pressure hydrogen storage system it is developing in collaboration with Stelia Aerospace Composites. In addition, Faurecia will showcase fuel cell stack for which the company has teamed up with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).
“The technologies highlighted at the Hannover Messe are representative of the rapid development of Faurecia’s open innovation ecosystem through partnerships and investment in start-ups. Our ambition is to become a leading player in this alternative powertrain energy by providing an efficient fuel cell system adapted to automotive needs,” said Christophe Schmitt, executive vice president of Clean Mobility at Faurecia. Schmitt announced that Faurecia has secured a contract from an international automaker to jointly develop a high-pressure hydrogen storage system for a large fleet of fuel-cell powered light commercial vehicles. Schmitt, however, has not disclosed identity of its automotive customer.
Significance: Faurecia is a major supplier of clean mobility solutions for the global automotive industry. The company’s expertise is in clean mobility includes emission control, energy recovery, weight reduction and acoustic performance. The French supplier is participating in the Hannover Messe for the first time this year. Last year Faurecia entered two key strategic partnership to speed up development of solutions for fuel cell vehicles. In May 2017, the company partnered with Stelia Aerospace for developing lightweight 350 and 700-bar hydrogen tanks. Stelia has over 30 years of experience in providing high-pressure hydrogen tanks for the aerospace industry. Four months later, Faurecia teamed up with CEA for R&D on fuel cell stack technology. CEA brings on the board its more than two decades of research and expertise in fuel cell stacks and development of key components such as the bipolar plates, which are critical in improving the efficiency of the fuel cell stack.
