Both companies will collaborate to advance materials for solid-state batteries, enhancing safety, efficiency and energy density for next-gen industries

Posco Future M and Factorial Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the development of all-solid-state battery technology. Both companies have agreed to cooperate in advancing materials for these batteries, which are used in next-generation industries such as electric vehicles, robotics and energy storage systems.

All-solid-state batteries offer increased safety, higher energy density and improved charging performance compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, as they use solid electrolytes instead of liquid ones between the cathode and anode.

The signing ceremony for the MOU took place at the Future Battery Forum in Berlin, attended by representatives from both companies. Posco Future M's successful demonstration of good rate capability in testing cathode material samples for all-solid-state batteries contributed to Factorial's decision to sign the MOU.

Through this agreement, Posco Future M aims to enhance its competitiveness in the all-solid-state battery materials market by continuing research and development in cathode materials, silicon anode materials, lithium metal anode materials and sulfide-based solid electrolytes.

Hong Young-Jun, head of Technology Research Laboratory at Posco Future M, highlighted the expected synergy between Factorial's battery cell technology and Posco Future M's expertise in cathode and anode materials.

Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial, noted that their collaboration could accelerate innovation, strengthen the global supply chain and drive cost reductions for solid-state batteries, which are becoming commercially viable. Factorial, headquartered in Massachusetts, US, operates pilot manufacturing facilities in South Korea.

Posco Future M plans to develop a diverse product portfolio of cathode and anode materials for various EV classes, aiming to supply customized products through continuous research and development efforts. The company will leverage capabilities from Posco Holdings N.EX.T Hub and its group to advance the future mobility industry. The MOU is nonbinding except for certain provisions, with the terms of the commercial partnership to be detailed in binding agreements.
