Hyundai Motor Group today (23 October) unveiled its latest powertrain technologies and future development strategy at its annual powertrain conference, according to a company press release.

In line with the global trend of engine downsizing, Hyundai is seeking to expand use of next-generation Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) engines across its line-up. Hyundai also aims to continue expanding its diesel line-up based on its existing U, R and S engines to more effectively respond to the needs of global customers. Hyundai also aims to speed up development of light-weight and highly fuel-efficient transmission. As the first automaker to develop 8-speed auto transmission for rear-wheel-drive vehicle in-house, Hyundai is now focusing on developing transmissions for premium models as well.

Significance: Hyundai has been paying more attention to vehicle design and utility and offering powertrains that are more customised to local conditions. For instance, while it is striving to increase the ratio of T-GDI engine-equipped models in major markets such as the United States and China, it has launched flex-fuel models tailor-made for the Brazilian market in nine different versions, offering a choice of three powertrains (see Brazil: 19 September 2012: Hyundai Launches Brazil-Only Flex-Fuel HB20 Model). Group company Kia has been pursuing similar initiatives, launching a revamped version of the Sorento sport utility vehicle recently after making exterior changes and making its powertrains more fuel efficient. As a result, the company has been gaining market share from competitors in Europe despite challenging conditions and slowing vehicle sales.
