Ford, Virginia Tech test self-driving vehicle communication system
US automaker aims to create standard visual language that pedestrians and bicyclists can easily understand
Ford has teamed up with Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to test a new method for self-driving vehicles to communicate with pedestrians, human drivers and bicyclists, the US automaker said in a press release on 13 September. The test made use of an in-house designed light bar mounted on the top of the windshield of a Ford Transit van to communicate about what the car was doing, including yielding, driving or accelerating from a stop. Further, in order to stimulate a fully self-driving experience without using an actual self-driving vehicle, the Virginia Tech team developed a seat suite to conceal actual driver.
