Interview with Stephan Reil, General Management Development Audi- RS3

What were you trying to achieve with the car? What was your intention? We wanted to set the performance highlight on the A3 model series. We already had the TTRS which, in the architectural structure of the vehicle, is familiar to the A3 family. So we took the five cylinder turbocharged engine and the seven-speed clutch from the TTRS and adopted the drivetrain in the A3 body. Then the decision had to be made on the question three door or five door A3? Based on practical use, and the fact we already have the real sporty coupe TT as a two door, we decided to go with the five door. Then we put in some typical design elements, which we always have in the RS models, like brushed aluminum, the material of the grill and the front fender. This is particularly interesting as we have a wider track and it is made out of carbon fibre which reduces weight.
