Hyundai’s Supplier Selection
The carmakers supplier selection criteria and biases, with a look its current major and strategic suppliers
Production of the first Hyundai models was largely supported by imported parts. Although there were a series of attempts to develop a local supply base over the interim years, the reliance on foreign OEMs reached a new high in the 1980s when the Korean government forced the appointed vehicle producers to set up partnerships with foreign carmakers. Daewoo entered into a 50/50 partnership with General Motors and Hyundai (defying government orders) sold a 10% stake to Ford, only to later replace the US firm with Mitsubishi.
