German automaker partners with robotics manufacturing company Kuka

Daimler is partnering with systems integrator and robotics manufacturing company Kuka to introduce a new generation of robots on its production lines, according to a company press release. The lightweight robots were originally conceived to work in space and have been introduced to help production line workers in manufacturing processes. Employees from both Daimler and Kuka are collaborating on tests and trials to optimise the use of robots by workers in production line processes such as assembly and in-vehicle screw application. They are also developing systems concepts to make co-operation between humans and robots safe.

Significance: The concept of having human and robots working in conjunction on the same production line process is relatively novel. Production processes are generally handled by either humans or robots and there has thus far been little scope where the two have worked in conjunction. Daimler and Kuka are working on cutting-edge processes where the lightweight robot acts as a worker's "third hand". The lightweight robot was originally developed by the German Aerospace Center. Its sensitive motorised grippers give it a delicate touch, which enables it to handle objects gently and perform difficult tasks precisely. In addition, both companies claim that due to their precise performance, lightweight robots also contribute to enhanced quality.
