General Motors (GM) Brazil workers vote for indefinite strike
Impasse in discussions at the company's facility in Sao Jose dos Campos, near Sao Paulo, over planned layoffs of nearly 1,600 workers.
Workers at General Motors' (GM) Brazilian plant have voted in favour of an indefinite strike, aggravating problems for the automaker, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP). Workers are planning industrial action for next week if the talks between the union and the automaker remain fruitless. The two sides are in discussions at the company's facility in Sao Jose dos Campos, near Sao Paulo, over planned layoffs of nearly 1,600 workers. "If there is no deal with GM, the company and also [Brazilian] President Dilma [Rousseff] will bear responsibility for the layoffs," union president Antonio Ferreira de Barros said. The parties are expected to meet for further negotiations on Saturday.
