Plans to assemble 50,000 cars per year

Volkswagen plans to open an assembly line in Taiwan, reports the Central News Agency. Volkswagen’s Taiwanese agent Taikoo Motors said yesterday that assembly is expected to start in Taiwan in 2015. The proposed plant is subject to regulatory approval. The report states that Volkswagen aims to acquire 165,000 square metres of land for the assembly of 50,000 cars per year – which will include the Passat and Sharan models.

Significance: Car sales in Taiwan are expected to rise to 219,830 units by 2015, up from 167,013 passenger cars sold in 2010, IHS Automotive data shows. Volkswagen sales of its brand vehicles are expected to rise to 7,261 passenger units by 2015. Volkswagen could consider a local assembly line in Taiwan as a base for exports for other regions in Asia.
