The plant is expected to start production in financial year 2015/16.

Maruti Suzuki has cleared a proposal to produce light commercial vehicles (LCVs) at its upcoming plant in Gujarat, according to a report in the Economic Times. The company has reportedly updated its suppliers about the decision. The vehicle, codenamed Y9T, is being developed at Maruti's research and development centre in India to compete in a segment that comprises the Tata Ace and Mahindra Maxximo. Like its competitors, the mini-truck will be powered by a two-cylinder diesel engine. The 800cc engine is in the advanced stages of development. The plant is expected to start production in financial year 2015/16. Separately, the company's Japanese parent firm is believed to be developing a range of diesel engines for its cars and LCVs, in a bid to end its reliance on Fiat. Suzuki's efforts in this direction could result in the development of 1.2- and 1.4-litre diesel engines.
