India poised to become Ford's global compact car base

Given Ford's minuscule share of the Indian vehicle market, its operations in the country will be driven by its export strategy.

As part of its larger global production restructuring plan, Ford is set to develop India as one of its global compact car production bases once its Sanand plant in the western state of Gujarat comes on stream in 2014, reports the Economic Times (ET). Under a project codenamed B562 after the namesake platform, which places greater responsibility on India compared with its bases in Europe and elsewhere, Ford plans to release three different compact cars in India – a small hatchback, a sub-four-metre sedan, and a mid-size compact sedan – all sharing the same platform over the next two to three years, reports the ET, citing sources close to developments.
