Talks come as GM's decision to exit Australia in 2017 will leave the Japanese automaker as the sole vehicle manufacturer in the country, putting immense pressure on its local supplier network.

The federal government is in talks with Toyota Australia in a bid to keep the company in the country after GM Holden announced its exit yesterday (11 December), reports Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News. Prime Minister Tony Abbott stated that he spoke to Toyota's Australian head, Max Yasuda. Abbott stated, "We want Toyota to continue. They are in a slightly different position to Holden. Much more of their local production has been for export. Toyota locally have been much more integrated into the global operations of the company, it seems, than with Holden."
