Toyota to boost domestic nickel-metal hydride battery output
Hybrids accounted for 42% of all new cars Toyota sold in Japan during the first 10 months of this year.
Starting in 2015, Toyota plans to invest about JPY10 billion (USD96.3 million) to boost production of nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries at a Miyagi Prefecture factory operated by subsidiary Primearth EV Energy, reports the Nikkei financial daily. The investment will raise the plant's output capacity by roughly 30%, enabling it to cater to 400,000 vehicles. Primearth EV Energy operates two other battery plants in Shizuoka Prefecture, each with a potential annual output of 400,000 units.
