What future does the manual transmission have?
The automotive industry and media have become focused on the drive for newer dual clutch transmissions (DCTs), and the development of automatics with an increasing number of forward speeds. However, what is likely to be the future for the humble manual transmission?
oday, manual transmissions (MTs) are fitted in about half of all light-duty, on-highway vehicles built globally. Moreover, IHS Automotive forecasts that this share will not diminish significantly, over the next seven years. Admittedly, the manual transmission is quite well developed, but efforts are still being made to improve their mechanical efficiency, and their shift quality.
