The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) also recommended strengthening underrun guards and attachment hardware, along with new testing requirements in 2011.

The National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) recently submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommendations for updating safety systems which could help prevent tractor-trailer-related injuries and fatalities. NTSB wants new trucks equipped with onboard blind spot systems, including enhanced mirror systems and sensor-based systems. The NTSB recommends improving truck drivers' vision around the area to the right of the cab, immediately at the back of the truck and the area that extends five metres in front of the cab. NTSB is also looking for trailers to have side underrun protection fitted and for revision of existing requirements for rear underrun protection systems for new trailers.
