Tesla vows to share all patents for the advancement of EV technology
EV battery pack may not be subject to the policy, as the pack has been co-developed with electronics giant Panasonic
Tesla Motors' chief executive officer, Elon Musk, yesterday (12 June) committed to sharing the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer's intellectual property with anyone "who, in good faith, wants to use our technology". Musk wrote on the Tesla blog that the company will share patents "in the spirit of the open-source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology". Musk said that Tesla's competition is not the small number of EVs that other OEMs build, but "the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world's factories every day. We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly evolving technology platform". Musk noted that Tesla could not construct EVs fast enough to address the carbon crisis.
