Concerns that the proportion of the aid relative to eligible investment costs could be higher than permitted under current guidelines.

The Volkswagen (VW) Group is to undergo an in-depth investigation by the European Commission over state aid provided by Portugal for its planned investments in the region. The Portuguese government informed the Commission in June that it planned to provide VW with EUR36.15 million (USD45.6 million) of state aid to facilitate the installation of the modular MQB platform technology at VW's AutoEuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal. The total investment is in the region of EUR672 million.
