New Product Development

Hyundai is starting to pursue a strategy of engine downsizing and turbocharging.

Hyundai has revealed a number of new powertrain options at the Paris Motor Show (France). According to a statement, it has shown off the new Kappa 1.0-litre T-GDI engine. This gasoline (petrol) engine is a three-cylinder, 998-cc engine based on the naturally aspirated variant of the same engine, but now including direct injection and a small single scroll turbocharger. It is capable of producing 120PS and 172 Nm of torque and will be first fitted to the second-generation i20. It is said to meet Euro VIc emissions standards to be introduced in 2017. It has also showed off its 1.4-litre version of the Kappa T-GDI engine. The 1,352-cc four-cylinder engine is 14kg lighter than the previous Gamma unit. The engine was revealed in the i30 CNG (compressed natural gas) concept car, which produces 117PS in CNG mode, delivering 206 Nm of torque. The CO2 emissions of this concept are said to be just 87 g/km and it already meets Euro VIc emission standards. Hyundai's new seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) was also fitted to the same concept.
