New engine is expected to complement the existing Fiat multi-jet engine and will not replace it.

Suzuki Motor is in the advanced stages of developing a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, reports the Economic Times, citing unnamed sources close to the development. The Japanese automaker has already developed an 800-cc diesel engine to be used in compact vehicles. Maruti Suzuki – Suzuki Motor's Indian subsidiary – is likely to launch a small commercial vehicle soon equipped with the engine. Built on a modular platform, the 800-cc diesel engine is being spawned into two variants − a 1.6-litre variant for Europe and a 1.5-litre variant for India. "This new engine is expected to complement the existing Fiat multi-jet engine and will not replace it. The aim is to offer wider choice to the customers," said one of the sources close to the company.
