SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) starts production in Chongqing
The three-way joint-venture needs additional capacity
SGMW, the three-way JV, which produces the Wuling brand of commercial vehicles and the Baojun brand of passenger vehicles, has commenced production at a new plant in Chongqing (China), the automaker has said in a news release sent to IHS Automotive. In June 2013, the SGMW JV announced the beginning of construction of a CNY6.6-billion manufacturing base in Chonqging in China. The base has an initial production capacity of 400,000 vehicles and 400,000 engines. "The Chongqing base will support SGMW's continued growth," said Shen Yang, president of SGMW, at the launch ceremony yesterday (14 December). "At the same time, it will contribute to the economy of Chongqing and southwestern China, while benefiting the development of China's automotive industry."
