Chevrolet shifts Camaro to Alpha platform
Alpha provides a strong foundation, but more than 70% of the components are unique to the Gen 6 Camaro
Chevrolet has announced that the 2016 model-year Camaro, set for a fan-based reveal at a special event on 16 May, will share only a bowtie emblem on the tail-lamp panel and the "SS" badge with the current product. The new Camaro will shift to the Alpha platform, related to the Cadillac ATS. In a company statement, General Motors (GM) executive vice-president of global product development Mark Reuss said, "Alpha provided a strong foundation, but more than 70% of the components are unique to the Gen 6 Camaro, including exterior and interior dimensions, an all-new interior, front and rear suspension, and powertrain components. The minute you see – and hear – the Gen 6, you know it’s a Camaro, from the stance to the driving experience to the sound of the Small Block V-8." GM says the front structure has been lengthened to provide the dash-to-axle ratio necessary for the desired profile, as well as being widened for the proper track. GM also says that 20% of the 6.2-litre LT1 V8 has been tailored for the Camaro, including new tubular "tri-Y" exhaust manifolds.
