General Motors (GM) mulls manufacturing Chevrolet Volt in China
Producing the Volt in China could reduce its market price
General Motors (GM) is considering building the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in China, reports Automotive News. Speaking at a media conference in Shanghai, China, GM CEO Mary Barra did not confirm the plans, but she and other GM executives emphasised the importance of electrification to the market. She said, "We are looking across the portfolio, being driven by what the customer wants." GM is displaying the Bolt EV at this year's Shanghai Motor Show (22−29 April), a vehicle due in 2017 with more than 200 miles of EV range. GM and its joint venture partner in China have promised 10 new models with some level of electrification by 2020, and the Cadillac CT6 PHEV is to be the first on the market. At the media conference, GM president Dan Ammann said that the expanding electrification into the Chinese market may deliver improved sales volumes and increased production, should the Chinese market see significant levels of growth of EV and PHEV use, supported by government incentives.
