Industry moving towards use of automatic transmissions, but competitors have already established new plants to meet demand

Japan-based automatic transmission manufacturer Jatco is looking to become the world’s largest automatic transmissions supplier by 2020, surpassing its Japanese rival Aisin AW Co. In an interview, Jatco CEO Terry Nakatsuka said that the supplier aims to expand its customer base and boost current small-volume sales to non-shareholder clients, including General Motors (GM) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCA). After years of adding capacity in Mexico, Thailand and China, the supplier now needs to consolidate its production base for stable growth, Nakatsuka told Automotive News.
