BorgWarner has announced that it is supplying its S-series turbochargers for Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty trucks built in Brazil. BorgWarner, encouraged by Brazil's InnovarAuto, has localised production of the superchargers as well. The turbochargers are applicable to Mercedes' full Euro V engine line and are built at its facility in Itatiba City, Brazil. In the statement, the president and general manager of BorgWarner turbo systems, Frederic Lissalde, said, "BorgWarner has been producing turbochargers for commercial vehicles in Brazil for 40 years. At our new facility in Itatiba, we have added capacity to help our customers increase Brazilian-made content in their vehicles."
Significance: Mercedes-Benz builds the Actros trucks at its Sao Bernardo plant, Brazil, as well as at Juiz de Fora. With the difficulties in the Brazilian market in 2014 and 2015, Mercedes' regional production is declining compared with 2014, though it is forecasted to slowly revive beginning in 2016, recovering to about 65,000 units in 2021, from 39,000 in 2014. Scania is also impacted by the decline in Brazil's market, with output declining from 30,225 units in 2013 to a forecasted 7,700 units in 2015. Scania's Brazilian production is not due to recover to 2013 levels within the forecast period, though it is expected to see production reach 14,000 units again in 2021.
