Volkswagen (VW) yesterday (8 October) ordered the recall of nearly 389 Polo hatchback models in India because of a faulty handbrake mechanism, according to local publication the Economic Times. VW India said that under certain conditions, the handbrake mechanism could lose effectiveness. "The analysis performed by Volkswagen has shown that a batch of handbrake cable retention levers in the rear brake liner might break under certain conditions," the automaker said in a statement.
Significance: VW India temporarily suspended sales of the identified Polo cars yesterday citing technical issues. The company has clarified that inspections and preventive repairs of the affected models in stock at dealerships have been completed and that sales deliveries of these models have resumed. Furthermore, it added that it would contact the owners of affected Polo vehicles and that the models would be repaired at all of its service centres in the country for free, starting from today (9 October). The company added that sales of other models in the Polo range, along with all other VW models, were not affected in India.
