Michelin has secured a contract from the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) to provide its Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre to the FIA Formula E Championship until the end of the 2018/19 season. Pascal Couasnon, director of Michelin Motorsport said, "We are delighted to have been selected by the FIA once again and to be able to continue our involvement in this competition which Michelin helped to found. Indeed, the tire we designed for Formula E - the Michelin Pilot Sport EV - is revolutionary in the world of motor racing and has been acclaimed by all the championship's drivers and teams."
Significance: Michelin has been associated with Formula E since the creation of this championship last year. The French tyre-maker submitted a bid for the tyre deal for Formula E in June this year along with other tyre manufacturers, including Pirelli. At the time of the bid, Michelin stated that the company would prefer supplying 18-inch tyres for the championship, which was the size that was eventually chosen. The move will underline Michelin's focus on combining performance and efficiency, particularly in the growth of alternative powertrain development. Michelin recently showcased the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyre at the Frankfurt Motor Show (Germany), the tread pattern of which is similar to that used for the FIA Formula E Championship.
