AvtoVAZ has temporarily halted production of certain vehicles on account of a shortage of components. According to a report by Esmerk Russian news service, the automaker is facing issues with the supply of wing mirror parts for nearly 1,000 vehicles. As a result, production of vehicles based on the Renault Logan platform has been temporarily suspended. The automaker is facing a component shortage for 600 Renault Sanderos, 200 Renault Logans and 200 Nissan Almeras. However, the report added that the automaker does not intend to break off its contract with the supplier. It is not immediately clear when the production of these nameplates will restart.
Significance: AvtoVAZ's Togliatti plant produces the Renault Sandero, Logan and Nissan Almera, among other nameplates. The plant also produces other models based on the B0 platform namely the Largus multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and the Largus van, although no information is currently available on whether production of these models is also affected. AvtoVAZ faced component supply issues last year too which resulted in disruption in output. Production eventually started in a few days following discussions with suppliers. This appears to be a recurring problem for AvtoVAZ and an indicator of the persisting legacy issues related to suppliers more used to working in a situation where monopolies and rigged bid tendering had been common place.
