Automakers must meet nearly 75 auto safety standards

US regulatory agency National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said that it foresees “significant” hurdles to driverless vehicles—autonomous vehicles without steering wheel or brake pedals and no way for a person to directly control them—though there are relatively few hurdles for semi-autonomous vehicles, which would have the ability to drive autonomously but not give up human controls.
