Tata Motors has brought in around 250 workers from its Pune factory in Maharashtra to its Sanand manufacturing plant in Gujarat in order to ensure that the facility meets its production targets, according to a report by the Business Standard. Production at the Sanand plant has been affected by a flash strike that started in February, resulting in a decline in production of the automaker's new Tiago hatchback.
Significance: Nearly 400 workers at Tata's plant in Sanand, Gujarat, went on strike yesterday (23 February) demanding the reinstatement of some suspended workers. The industrial action at the plant is a cause for concern for the automaker as the facility is the sole production base for the Tiago, which is expected to be launched later this month. The automaker started accepting bookings for the vehicle on 10 March. Tata Motors' efforts to control the situation at the Sanand plant have gained support from the state government, which has prohibited workers from taking industrial action within the factory premises. Nevertheless, a resolution to the matter is still a long way off as the workers are planning to approach the Gujarat High Court to challenge the government's prohibition order. Hence, the automaker's move to bring in workers from the other plant will help smooth the rollout of the Tiago.
