Latest-generation version has so far been imported.

BMW India has started local assembly of its recently launched second-generation X1 sport utility vehicle (SUV) at its Chennai plant in Tamil Nadu, according to a report by Overdrive. The latest-generation vehicle is 135kg lighter than its predecessor despite being longer. BMW has increased the vehicle's wheelbase by 90mm and this has not only added 85 litres to trunk (boot) space but has also increased legroom for rear passengers by 37 mm. The vehicle is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates maximum power of 190 bhp and maximum torque of 400 Nm. The vehicle's powertrain also includes an 8-speed automatic transmission. The new X1 is priced at INR2.99 million (USD44,471).

Significance: BMW launched the latest-generation compact SUV earlier this year at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The automaker has been assembling the popular SUV at its Chennai plant since 2010 but the latest-generation version had until now been imported. BWM plans to offer the vehicle with a gasoline (petrol) engine later this year. The X1 is BMW's flagship product in the growing compact segment. The introduction of the latest-generation vehicle is already helping the automaker with sales volumes, while the start of local assembly is expected to aid margins. IHS Automotive forecasts that the introduction of the latest-generation model will boost Indian sales of the popular nameplate by 40% this year to nearly 2,300 units.
