Johnson Controls (JCI) is supplying seats to the new Volvo S90, according to a company press release. In addition to the front seats, JCI has also developed a rear seat bench for the vehicle, for which the supplier worked with the automaker on the design of its metal structure and integration.
Tony Malila, vice-president & general manager, Customer Group Volvo, at Johnson Controls Automotive Seating said, “Collaborating closely with the team at Volvo, we designed a seat that optimally utilizes the vehicle's interior, providing all occupants with plenty of space and comfort. The goal was to make riding in the Volvo S90 feel like driving through the quiet, relaxed calm of the Swedish wilderness.”
Significance: The use of space in Volvo vehicles is fairly economical with the front seats taking up comparatively little space and offering a comfortable ride. This is possible due to their slim backrests, which leaves enough leg space for rear passengers.
Foam plays an integral part in offering seat comfort in a car as it gives the back of the seat cushion its shape. Prior to this, JCI provided seats for the Volvo XC90 in February this year.
Johnson Controls plans to spin off its automotive seating and interiors business into a new company. In January this year, the company announced that its automotive seating and interiors business will be called Adient after the entity is created as a new publicly traded company in October 2016. The company’s ‘Seating’ division produces automotive seat metal structures and mechanisms, foam, trim, fabric and complete seat systems.
