Maruti Suzuki said it will resume vehicle production at its Gurgaon plant from today (1 June) while also restarting certain operations such as casting and manufacture of transmissions at the Manesar plant. The automaker had temporarily suspended production following a fire at supplier Subros's plant in Manesar, which resulted in disruption of receipt of certain components. A report by the Press Trust of India quoted Subros chairman Ramesh Suri as saying that the company will start supplies to Maruti Suzuki from its facilities in Noida. The executive also said the company is working to bring the Manesar facility back into production.
Significance: The automaker has started operations at the Gurgaon plant but has not clarified if it has secured alternative sourcing of components. Subros is a long-time supplier of air-conditioning systems to the automaker. In addition to Manesar, Subros has two plants in Noida (Uttar Pradesh) and one each in Pune (Maharashtra), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Sanand (Gujarat). It makes sense for Subros to arrange supplies from its Noida plant, given the geographical proximity to Maruti Suzuki's production base in Haryana.
