Maruti Suzuki brings forward plant maintenance shutdown

Plant Closures & Downtime

Plans to idle its plants between 6 and 11 June

Maruti Suzuki has said it will bring forward the scheduled plant maintenance shutdown of its two manufacturing facilities. The automaker now plans to idle its plants between 6 and 11 June, as opposed to the earlier schedule between 27 June and 2 July, said the company in a statement. "This will enable the closure period to be utilized for arranging supply of components, both from M/s Subros Limited as well as from other sources, and result in higher production volumes after the closure," said the statement.

Significance: The decision is taken following a fire at Subros' Manesar plant which supplied air conditioner units to Maruti Suzuki apart from other automakers. The automaker has estimated production loss of over 10,000 units due to the closure. Earlier, Subros chairman Ramesh Suri had said that the company will start supplies to Maruti Suzuki from its facilities in Noida. Following this, Maruti Suzuki restarted production at Gurgaon plant; but output at its Manesar facilities is still down. As such, bringing forward the maintenance shutdown will offer time to the automaker and the vendor to restore supplies.
