Toyota's durable edge
In depth analysis of the complex and sometimes secretive world of Toyota suppliers
With just over 200 members, Toyota Motor’s supplier network in Japan, also known as Kyohokai, is made up of a diverse group of companies – small to big, listed to private, Toyota-owned to independent and those that are heavily reliant on sales to Toyota Motors and others that are more diversified. Unlike other supplier networks in Japan, Toyota’s network has remained relatively stable, especially in terms of the number of suppliers. Other networks, like those of Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, have undergone significant changes and are in flux. This speaks for Toyota’s vision, stability and interest in maintaining stability in its supplier network.
