Are aftermarket HUDs an innovation benchmark?

Insights

In the last 10 years, the aftermarket has become less and less relevant for core infotainment because on-board factory-installed systems like Ford SYNC, Nissan Connect, Chrysler UConnect, BMW ConnectedDrive and many others have become continuously better in terms of features and apps, all while integrating more holistically into the interior HMI of the vehicle. Seldom can buyers find a new vehicle for sale with a removable 2DIN infotainment system. HMI and user experience has been a core reason for factory-installed infotainment dominance over the aftermarket. But, what happens when the aftermarket attacks the very element that has allowed factory-installed infotainment sales to flourish? What happens when the aftermarket goes after a highly-complex, high-cost HMI system like the Head-Up Display, and then makes it cheaper and better than anything automakers have come close to?
