In near future, connectivity will enable cars to connect to smart home, smart city via cloud

Dr. Volkmar Denner, CEO of Robert Bosch, believes that mobility will be seamlessly connected in the next few years. “The car as we know it will soon be history,” Denner said while addressing the industry wide trend toward mobility services at the Automobilwoche Congress in Berlin, Germany. “Today you use the internet to book a hotel room; in the future you’ll arrange your mobility online as well,” Denner said.

Significance: Modern vehicles are already offering high level of connectivity. According to Bosch, virtually all new vehicles sold in Germany feature internet, which is essential to avail real-time traffic data, the eCall emergency call services, and music streaming. In next few years, Denner expects vehicles will be able to do more than this and become the driver’s personal assistant. Connectivity is also becoming popular in public transportation and car-sharing services. Bosch is part of the Stuttgart Services project, where the company is providing a software solution that connects various modes of transportation. The company’s software enables one chip that is needed to avail car sharing, bike sharing, train and bus travel as well as for admission to amenities such as swimming pools or libraries. In near future, connectivity will also enable to connect car via cloud to the smart home and smart city, says Bosch. Such connectivity will allow people; for example, take delivery of parcel at home, even when they are away, on the train or in their car.
