BMW will invest EUR200 million (USD233.4 million) for expanding its Leipzig plant in eastern Germany, the automaker said in a press release today. The automaker will invest in extending the paint shop and in the bodyshop and assembly areas. The expansion work will start next year and is scheduled to complete in 2020. “We are delighted by the ongoing high demand for the BMW vehicles we produce here in Leipzig,” said Leipzig plant director, Hans-Peter Kemser. “This further development of the plant is an important move and means we will have the necessary competitive structures in place to continue building vehicles here in the future,” Kemser said.
Significance: According to BMW, its Leipzig plant produces BMW 1 Series, 2 Series, i3 pure electric and i8 plug-in hybrid sports cars. The plant has daily production capacity of around 980 cars. The planned investment in the Leipzig plant will make it ready for production of next generation vehicles in future. Apart from Leipzig, BMW’s plants in Germany are located in Dingolfing, Munich and Regensburg. BMW is also expanding production capacity at its plants outside Germany. Last month, the German automaker announced EUR600 million investment at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina between 2018 and 2012.
