Trails will evaluate impacts of heavy vehicle platooning on safety, fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions

The UK government’s Department of Transport (DfT) and Highway England have approved GBP8.1 million (USD10.4 million) in funding to begin real-world trials of truck platooning on the UK roads next year. The trial will be led by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and will be participated by heavy truck manufacturer DAF, automotive research consultancy Recardo and logistic company DHL, according to a press release by TRL last week. Among the consortium members, Ricardo earlier collaborated with TRL on a feasibility study of heavy truck platooning for the DfT in 2014.
