California proposes more lenient rules to test and deploy self-driving cars

New rules are expected to take effect by June 2018

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has proposed a revised set of regulations that would allow automakers and technology companies to test autonomous vehicles without a driver behind the wheel, reports Reuters. These companies, however, are still required to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and certify that their vehicles are designed to follow state traffic laws.
