5G technology is expected to be a key enabler of fully autonomous driving

Sumitomo Electric and NTT DOCOMO have been jointly testing real-time collection and delivery of traffic information using advanced sensors and 5G mobile communication system in Yokohama, Japan since 19 September, the Japanese companies said in a press release last week. The test is expected to help the two companies “to study how to ensure that traffic data is instantaneous and visible and how to make systems as user friendly as possible to provide vehicles and pedestrians with safe and practical assistance”, the press release said.
