GM is using new ‘generative design’ software for additive manufacturing from Autodesk to develop lightweight automotive components for future vehicles, including zero-emission vehicles, the automaker said in a press release on 3 May. Autodesk’s technology leverages cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms to quickly explore multiple permutations of a part design by generating numerous geometric design options after considering parameters such as weight, strength, material choice, fabrication method and more. The user then decides the best part design option.
