The new age mapping technology – powering fully autonomous vehicles

Since the introduction of Honda’s Electro Gyro-Cator navigation unit in 1981, automotive navigation systems have come a long way. In-vehicle navigation has become ubiquitous in modern day cars, enabling consumers to seamlessly navigate from one place to other, along with other features including traffic information and locating points of interest. However, with the advent of self-driving technologies, the requirement of maps has changed drastically. As the driving task is gradually shifting from man to machine, the scope and functionalities of digital maps are also changing. The user of navigation maps would no longer be a human driver but the autonomous driving system piloting the vehicle, which requires maps which are developed specifically for autonomous vehicles.
