BMW unveils new polygonal steering wheel for iNEXT autonomous electric car

New steering wheel design helps drivers in autonomous vehicles to seamlessly switch between automated driving and active driving modes

BMW has unveiled a new polygonal steering wheel for its all-new iNEXT autonomous electric SUV, due 2021, the German carmaker said in a press release on 22 July. The steering wheel features flattened rim both at the lower and upper section and rounded at the corners at the sides to offer comfortable hand rest. It has optical fibers integrated in the side section that inform the driver of the availability of highly automated driving function using color signals. The wheel also indicates the complex driving conditions when the driver is expected to take control of the vehicle.
