The external airbag system uses a combination of airbags and sensors to mitigate collision impact on cyclists, motorcyclists, or pedestrians

Honda has secured a patent for an external airbag system that protects motorcyclists or pedestrians in the event of collision, reports Escpacenet. According to the patent drawings, the external airbag system uses a combination of airbags and sensors to mitigate collision impact on these vulnerable road users. The sensors can gauge both distance and size of the person and/or object such as bicycle or motorcycle that is about to collide with Honda’s vehicle. This information help to determine how hard and/or fast the external airbag system would deploy. Honda’s patent also covers mechanisms to prevent a pedestrian, once hit, from sliding up over the roof or down off the hood of the car.
