Chile temporarily freezes lithium extraction contract awarded to BYD

The freeze is in response to an appeal filed by the governor of Copiapo and the Indigenous communities that inhabit the Atacama Desert salt flats

The Court of Appeals of Copiapo, Chile on the 14 January accepted the Atacama regional government’s appeal to freeze the USD61 million lithium extraction contract awarded to Chinese automaker BYD two days prior.
