Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars has launched its all-new battery-electric vehicle — the ES90 — with an 800-V technology, the company announced March 5. The 800-V technology allows the fully electric sedan to offer a longer range and faster charging than any electric Volvo before, the company said.

“Our new 800-volt technology makes its debut in the ES90, helping to unlock faster charging, a better overall performance and more efficiency,” the company said, adding that the ES90 can add 300 km of driving range in just 10 minutes at 350-kW fast-charging stations and offers a driving range of up to 700 km under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure  (WLTP) testing cycle.

Moreover, the new Volvo ES90 is powered by next-generation core computers that represent an eightfold improvement over the previous generation, the company said, adding that the ES90 is built on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture, which consists of one single set of hardware and software modules that are expected to underpin Volvo’s all upcoming electric cars in the future.

According to the company, the SPA2 architecture allows Volvo’s fully electric cars to improve the overall performance and safety technology throughout its life cycle, rolling them out quickly via over-the-air updates across all models based on the Superset.

In addition, the bold proportions of the ES90 also contribute to the car’s efficiency and translate into a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25. This illustrates how efficiently a car moves through the air as the lower the value, the more efficient the car becomes. For customers, this translates into less energy consumption and a longer driving range.

The new Volvo ES90 is available in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The company plans to add other markets later in 2025.

“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” said Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars. “It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”
