BAIC acquires Swedish transmission company Weigl
Paves way to develop own transmissions components
Beijing Automotive Industry Corp (BAIC) has bought the Swedish transmission plant, Weigl Transmission Plant AB from Weigl Group for €31m, reports the China Daily newspaper. The plant was formerly owned by GM and was taken over by the Weigl Group in 2008. The site in Gothenburg, Sweden is spread over an area of 40,000m2 and has annual capacity to produce 500,000 transmission and clutch housings, 500,000 input and output shafts, 250,000 ring gears and 2m wheels. The plant makes parts for the F35 transmission system—a Saab-designed five-speed manual transaxle transmission originally introduced in the 1984 Saab 9000, and used in the Saab 9-3 and 9-5. BAIC bought the technologies for Saab's 9-3 and 9-5 car models, turbine engines and gearboxes for €140m in December 2009.
